CDMA Nexus Support Clarified
Fri, 2012-02-03 21:00
Dan Morril posted a quick note on the Google Groups forum regarding the latest rumor of Google no longer supporting the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. He states its simply a clarification about support for these devices and gives a brief explanation of why the websites were updated. Verizon Galaxy owners don't need to completely freak out. The crespo4g (Sprint Nexus S 4G) was also dropped from the support site.
Hello! This is a quick clarification about support for CDMA devices.
For various technical reasons, recent CDMA Android devices implement core telephony functionality in .apk files provided in binary form by the carriers. To function correctly, these .apk files must be signed by the so-called "platform" key. However, when an individual creates a custom build from the AOSP source code, they don't use the same signing key as these CDMA flies were signed with. The result is that these files don't work properly, and pure AOSP builds running on these devices can't place calls, access mobile data, and so on. Because we aim to make sure that we are as clear as possible about the degree of support that devices have, we updated the docs over atsource.android.com to reflect this reality. We will still make available as many as possible of the closed-source binaries for these devices, and Nexus devices will continue to have unlockable bootloaders. And, of course, GSM/HSPA+ devices are still supported, as are any other devices we're able to support. We've simply updated the documentation to be clearer about the current extent of CDMA support. We are of course always working to improve support, and we'll keep everyone updated as we make improvements. Thanks as always for your interest in AOSP! - Dan Source:Google GroupsCDMA Nexus Support Clarified originally appeared on AndroidGuys.

Fri, 2012-02-03 20:14Recently, Samsung made it clear that there will be no sign of Galaxy S III at the Mobile World Congress later this month, but that doesn't mean it's not coming soon. It's rumored that the manufacturer will be introducing Samsung Galaxy S II Plus, which will feature a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor along with Android 4.0. Many people are looking forward to the Galaxy S III, which will be a TRUE successor to the current version. According to mobile analyst Eldar Murtazin, Samsung will be launching it in April.
Well, it's still a mystery, and hopefully it will be solved sooner or later. By the way, we all just can't wait to have a look on the Galaxy S III, I hope Mr.Blurrycam is reading this. Anyway, it's rumored that SGSIII will feature Quad-core Exynos processor, a Super AMOLED Plus 720p display, 4G LTE connectivity, 2GB of RAM and Android 4.0. Now those are some mind blowing specs.

Crittercism: “iOS apps crash more than Android apps”
Fri, 2012-02-03 16:33Startup mobile app monitoring firm Crittercism has released a new report which is bound to get people talking about Apple vs. Android all over again. As if the fanboys ever take a break. The crux of the finding is this: Apple and its various OS iterations is not any more stable than Android and its 'fragmented' ecosystem.
In data collected between December 1 and 15 Crittercism found that there were at least 23 different iOS operating systems that crashed. Android, for its part, had 33 operating systems that crashed. Leading the way with the most crashes was iOS 5.01 with 28.64% of overall crashes. Considering just how new the OS it's no wonder that apps didn't play nice. However, even older releases such as iOS 4.2.10 had 12.64% of crashes while iOS 4.3.3 had another 10.66%. Android's worst offender looks to be 2.3.3 at 3.86%, followed by 2.3.4 with 3.65%.
Crittercism analyzed a total of more than 214 million app launches from November and December 2011 from apps that use its service (see graph at top of this article). There were about 3 times more app launches for iOS that Crittercism analyzed, about 162 million to 52 million. But the analysis examined crashes as a percentage of each app launch, so this data takes out the issue of there being more iOS than Android apps.
What causes crashing? Plenty. As Crittercism CEO Andrew Levy reminds us, it can be as a result of location/GPS services, data connection, language support, advertising platforms, and too much memory usage. I've witnessed every one of these reason on multiple Android devices over the years and I bet you've had a few yourself. Another thing to keep in mind, as it pertains to Android vs. iOS, is that Android allows users to auto-update apps. As new versions of Android roll out and developer make hidden changes, us users can go about our business without thinking about compatibility. That is, if developers care about feedback and usability.
While we note that this is only one report, from one particular time frame, it's nice to be on this side of the fence once in a while. I suspect that Android will see a new round of issues with 4.0 and the various releases trickling out with new models and updates.

A couple new LG Androids pass certification
Fri, 2012-02-03 15:59
The UPnP forum recently listed 2 new LG Android devices which recently passed certification. There isn't much information available regarding these new handsets, but we know them as the LG-P880 and LG-p700.
According to the LG website source, the LG-P700 is running Android v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with a display resolution of 480x600. Kind of an odd resolution if you ask me, but LG is known for their small handsets, so it makes sense. We've yet to see ICS on a smaller device with crappy resolution, completely different than the high-end handsets we've become accustomed to.
The LG-P880 boasts a HD 720p resolution which seems to be the new standard for high-end Android devices. Perhaps this is the LG-X3 we saw a few weeks ago? That would make it a quad-core Tegra3 device, but that's enough speculation.
I'm sure more information will be released in the coming weeks, and we'll be right here to let you know about it.

Android near 50% Market Share in latest comScore results
Fri, 2012-02-03 15:13
The comScore MobiLens service pushed its latest findings from the October to December 2011 trends. The study surveyed more than 30,000 subscribers across the United States. They found Samsung to be the top dog with a 5% lead over its closest competitor. Samsung has a right to be excited by these numbers, with bragging rights over 25% of the market share. This is likely due to the release of their Galaxy SII series of devices which debuted during the survey.

Google also has a big reason to be excited. Their market share for Android devices is near 50% and almost 20% more than the competition. Of the 97.9 million people with smart phones in the US, 47.3% of them are using Android.

Text messaging is the #1 activity people are doing on their mobile device. 74.3% of mobile subscribers use this service, followed by 47.6% of people that use downloaded apps.
To sum all this up, many people own Samsung devices running Android and they send a ton of text messages. Who would've thought?

Picture of Asus TF300T leaks, Transformer Prime successor?
Fri, 2012-02-03 14:59Asus hasn't even got rid of all the bugs in the Transformer Prime and yet there's another Transformer on the way bearing the codename TF300T. Given the fact that the Tranformer Prime is still quite new and it would be unwise to release yet another Android tablet this soon, this device is probably running Windows 8 although there's no sign of the obligatory Windows button on the front. Of course it's possible that the TF300T runs Android - it's just highly unlikely - but we wanted to let you know about this one anyway.
Also interesting is the 'T' in the codename. Asus announced a HD version of the 'old' Transformer Prime, dubbed TF201T, at CES 2012, which leaves me with the belief that this leaked device is running at a resolution of 1200*1920 as well.

Google proactively hunting down malware in Android Market with ‘Bouncer’
Thu, 2012-02-02 19:48Google today announced that they have been actively hunting down malicious apps and games in the Android Market with a service called Bouncer. Advising that the system has been in place for a while now, Google tells us that it uses a number of checks. Aside from scanning new uploads, the service runs each application looking for malware-like behaviors and also scans developer accounts to "prevent malicious and repeat-offending developers from coming back." According to Google, this has helped lead to a roughly 40 percent decrease in malware over 2011.
It's probably no coincidence that Google makes this announcement on the heels of the recent Android.Counterclank scare. Initially thought to be malicious in nature, it was later found to be really strong, intrusive advertising. Perhaps Google wants to help clear up any misconception oversight on their part.
Of course this Bouncer stuff won't extend beyond the Android Market so we're not totally free and clear of malware. People are still going to look for exploits and loopholes in code and Google won't be there to hold your hand should you go downloading something from some random website in the middle of the night.

Spacetime Studios begins teasing Vampire MMO ‘Dark Legends’
Thu, 2012-02-02 18:41Spacetime Studios has begun teasing the next release in their popular Legends series of MMO games for Android. Expected to arrive in March at the annual Game Developers Summit, Dark Legends opens with the player recently raised and under the direction of the vampire that sired them. If you've ever played Pocket Legends or Star Legends then you know full well what your in for - a time killer of the highest order.
Dark Legends puts players up against undead, werewolves, demons and humans in both single and multilpayer modes. The combat system includes new mechanics (charge attacks, drain enemies), but the deeper narrative is what really has our attention. There's nothing quite like a rich, immerse story (with vampires and undead) that has us burying our face in our phones.

MetroPCS extends $40 rate plan to 4G LTE Android devices
Thu, 2012-02-02 16:04MetroPCS, in an effort to rope in more 4G LTE smartphone buyers, has decided to extend its $40 4G LTE rate plan to all of their device. Previously, consumers with handsets like the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G or LG Esteem had to choose from the $50 or $60 plans. This new option gives first-time buyers and light users a third choice with the 100MB data bucket. As was the case before, all plans include unlimited talk and text. While it's tough to imagine anyone wanting to cap themselves at 100MB for 4G LTE data we still applaud MetroPCS for giving customers more no-contract choice.

Google Docs updates tablet UI, adds offline support
Thu, 2012-02-02 14:59Let's face it, Google Docs never was the prettiest nor most functional app on Android and that's quite a shame. Being an official Google app, you'd at least expect it to follow the design guidelines the very same developer stated. Another major drawback was the lack of offline reading and editing.
Both these issues have been fixed in the newest edition of the Google Docs app. You can now download your documents for offline reading and sync them later when you're connected to the internet again the selected documents will automatically sync - but of course you can also tap the sync button.
A few enhancements have been made for your tablet as well. Documents now appear in high resolution and you can 'flip' pages just like you would on a book and the overall experience is a little bit better.
Google Docs doesn't get updated that often but when there's an update, it's a big one. Have you used Google Docs in the past, did you stay away from it? Will this update change anything? Let us know in the comments below.
